Who Was Agansing Rai?

Born in 1920 in Nepal, Agansing Rai joined the legendary 2nd Battalion, 5th Royal Gurkha Rifles (Frontier Force), a regiment renowned for producing some of the bravest warriors the world has ever seen. His unwavering loyalty, courage, and grit stood out even among the elite ranks of the Gurkhas.

The Heroic Act

On 26 June 1944, during World War II in Burma (now Myanmar), Havildar Agansing Rai led his section in a ferocious assault against heavily fortified Japanese positions at Mouglaung. Despite intense machine gun fire, he charged head-on, killing several enemy soldiers and capturing enemy weapons. His actions inspired his men and turned the tide of battle.

His sheer bravery, leadership, and disregard for personal safety earned him the Victoria Cross.
