Gaje Ghale: A Timeless Hero of the Gurkhas
When we speak of courage, loyalty, and the unshakable spirit of the Gurkhas, one name that echoes through history is Gaje Ghale. A man whose bravery under fire earned him the prestigious Victoria Cross, Gaje Ghale is not just a war hero — he is a symbol of Nepali pride and the Gurkha legacy.
A Warrior’s Beginning

Born in 1918 in the remote hills of Gorkha, Nepal, Gaje Ghale grew up surrounded by stories of valor and duty. Like many brave sons of Nepal, he joined the British Indian Army as a Gurkha, destined to carve his own story into the annals of history.

The Victoria Cross Moment
At just 24 years old, during World War II in Burma (now Myanmar), Naik Gaje Ghale led his section of the 5th Royal Gurkha Rifles in an assault against a heavily fortified Japanese position in May 1943. Despite being severely wounded, he refused to be evacuated. Instead, he continued leading his men with unyielding determination, capturing the position and inspiring his unit to victory.
For his exceptional leadership and unwavering bravery, Gaje Ghale was awarded the Victoria Cross — the highest military honor for gallantry in the face of the enemy. His heroism exemplifies the Gurkha spirit: fearless, loyal, and relentless.
