Ram bahadur Limbu VC: A True Gurkha legend

At Gurkha Watch, we honor bravery, heritage, and timeless commitment — qualities deeply embedded in every timepiece we create. One man who embodies these traits is Ram bahadur Limbu VC, a name that echoes through the proud history of the Gurkhas. His story is not just about military excellence but about unshakable courage under fire.

The Man Behind the Medal

Born on July 8, 1939, in the remote hills of Chyangthapu village, Tehrathum, Eastern Nepal, Ram bahadur Limbu joined the British Army at a young age, enlisting in the 10th Princess Mary’s Own Gurkha Rifles. His legacy was sealed during the Indonesia–Malaysia confrontation in Sarawak, Borneo, where his unparalleled bravery earned him the Victoria Cross — the highest military honor awarded for valor in the British and Commonwealth forces.

The Act of Ultimate Bravery

On May 21, 1965, in the dense jungle of Borneo, Lance Corporal Limbu and his section were ambushed by Indonesian troops. Under relentless enemy fire, he crawled through open ground — not once, but twice — to rescue two wounded comrades. Despite being shot at from close range and seeing his own rifle shattered by enemy fire, he succeeded in bringing them to safety.

With exceptional calm and discipline, he returned to his section, regrouped them, and continued the assault, forcing the enemy to retreat. His selflessness and unshakable determination saved lives and turned the tide of battle.

Legacy of a Warrior

Rambahadur Limbu was the last living Gurkha recipient of the Victoria Cross. His name was etched in history, not just in medals and military citations, but in the hearts of Nepalis and the Gurkha brotherhood across the world. He represents the unyielding courage, humility, and honor that define the Gurkha spirit.
