Sher Bahadur Thapa VC – The Gurkha Hero of the Battle of San Marino
Sher Bahadur Thapa VC stands among the most legendary names in Nepal’s history—an extraordinary Gurkha soldier whose courage in World War II earned him the Victoria Cross, the highest award for bravery in the British Commonwealth. His story is one of selflessness, determination, and timeless honor.

Early Life of Sher Bahadur Thapa

Born in the rugged hills of Nepal, Sher Bahadur Thapa was raised with the values that define the Gurkha spirit—loyalty, bravery, and discipline. Following in the footsteps of countless brave Nepalis, he joined the British Indian Army and served in the 1st Battalion, 9th Gurkha Rifles. His regiment was famous worldwide for its skill, resilience, and unwavering courage.
World War II and the Battle of San Marino
In September 1944, during the Italian Campaign of World War II, the Allied forces advanced against German troops defending the hilltop republic of San Marino. The terrain was treacherous, the enemy was well-entrenched, and the fighting was fierce.
On the night of 18th September 1944, Sher Bahadur Thapa’s company came under intense machine-gun and mortar fire. Showing remarkable bravery, he and his section commander advanced and silenced a heavily defended machine-gun post. Later, he pressed forward alone under enemy fire, destroying more positions and inspiring his comrades.
When ordered to cover his section’s withdrawal, he did so fearlessly—rescuing two wounded men and carrying them to safety. Moments later, while engaging the enemy, he was fatally wounded. His sacrifice allowed his comrades to regroup and secure their position.

For his extraordinary heroism in the Battle of San Marino, Sher Bahadur Thapa was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross—a lasting tribute to the courage of the Gurkha soldier.
